3 Types of Muscle Tissue
Function: Produces mobility (movement) and produces heat
Skeletal Muscles
Attached to bones (or connective tissue such as ligaments)
Typically under conscious control
Responsible for most of body movements
Moves bones & other structures
(about 640 types in the body)
Cardiac Muscles
Found only in the heart (myocardium)
Contracts in response to signals from the cardiac conduction system to make the heart beat
Made from cells called cardiocytes
Striated appearance, short thicker, branched
Smooth Muscles
Works organs (stomach, bladder, digestive)
Changes shape to facilitate the body
Muscle contractions are involuntary
(Triggered by impulses that travel through the autonomic nervous system to the smooth muscle)
